  1. ESCORT RAID ON FRANKFURT
  2.  
  3. On December 24, 1944, the Allies launched 
  4. what was to be the largest air strike of 
  5. the war.  1,884 American bombers, escorted 
  6. by 803 fighters, dropped more than ten 
  7. million pounds of bombs on airfields and 
  8. communication centers in western Germany. 
  9. 502 RAF bombers combined with the whole 
  10. Ninth AF Bomber Command attacked targets 
  11. in the Ruhr Valley.  Response by the 
  12. Luftwaffe was strong, however seventy-
  13. five German aircraft were lost to Allied 
  14. fighters, seventy of these being claimed 
  15. by Eighth AF pilots.

  17. Once the heavies had completed their
  18. bombing runs, the fighters were able to
  19. drop to the deck to hit targets of
  20. opportunity.  These targets included rail 
  21. and road traffic, as well as enemy 
  22. aircraft both in the air and on the 
  23. ground.

  27. You and your wingman are flying escort
  28. for a formation of B-17s en route to
  29. bomb the railway center at Frankfurt.
  30. Guard your bombers against attack by
  31. German fighters.  Some of the enemy
  32. planes may be carrying air-to-air
  33. rockets, making it imperative for you 
  34. to intercept each group as quickly as
  35. possible.

  37. There may be an opportunity for you to 
  38. bounce enemy aircraft operating from 
  39. Wiesbaden airfield on your way home.
